Liberty's Kids Wikia
Hey, I know I do not frequent LiveJournal as much. But I'll cut to the chase, I joined wikia, the first wikia that I'm trying to tackle is the Liberty's Kids wiki.
There's not much people there to help with the editing, there's a lot to clean up, and to do to there. So, here's the wiki, in case you guys want to add to it and to let you know that there's a wiki dedicated to our favorite historical fiction cartoon.

Link: http://libertyskids.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

I put some bulk and care into the LKW, since one of the guys, who knows wikia/fandom better than me, has school and can't do any wikia fun for the time being. I don't know when she'll be back though.

Notes:

I'm known as Sarah Philips over at Wiki/Fandom.

A few notes about the series
Here are a few things that you may find interesting about the series. Sarah is modeled on our daughter, London. When she was in 5th grade London, who is not a big reader, was bored with her history books. I realized that there was another way she could learn. The original concept for the show went like this...  (By the way, the first name was Poor Richard's Almanac)

POOR RICHARD'S ALMANAC
A Revolutionary Cartoon about the real stories of the American Revolution as seen through the eyes of two young reporters, one, a young lady coming from England in search of the American Dream and a young Yankee already living it.

Henri and Moses were later additions to the show as it went through the development process.

The person who is responsible for bringing in all the stars is mostly Andy Heyward who was the CEO of DIC. He made it a mission to bring in top actors. The person who then went out and spoke to all the agents was Marsha Goodman, the voice director. She put in hundreds of calls to try and book the actors.

Annette Bening (Abigail Adams) was the actor who did the most reading in preparation for her part. She came in knowing so much about Abigail that she brings extra depth to the part. I personally loved Dustin Hoffman as Benedict Arnold. He loved playing Benedict.

The boxed DVD set has interviews with most of the key members of the production team. By the way, I thought the input of the executives from PBS was very good. They were extremely smart people and helped the process.

My favorite episode is the John Paul Jones episode where Sarah has to decide whether she is an American or British. It was this internal conflict of Sarah's that we thought added another level to the show and Sarah.

More info about a new book
I was asked a couple very good questions after my post, here are my responses. First of all, the treatment of slavery was the most contentious issue we faced in the creating of the series. One of the things that we learned is that kids perceive things differently than adults because of the lack of overall context. Thus, we brought in a couple experts on the effects of media on young minds. These people were very helpful. If you look at the episode where Moses and the kids go into the South and we meet Moses' brother, you really see how the issue was dealt with. First, we tried to deal with the characters as individuals and not stereotypes. Thus, the feelings and beliefs of each person are dealt with. Next, because our heroes are the youngest people in the show, our viewers identify with the views and aspirations of these characters and incorporate their attitudes as the take-away. For all we did however, I still feel that we could have done more, in the South, in our first forty episodes. The challenge of dealing with slavery did have an effect, along with some historical bias towards the battles in the North.

I believe I am drawn to covering the Civil War next because of the fact that it goes to the heart of this horribly contentious issue. I also plan to tie in the start of the Plain's Wars with the Native People. Most people don't realize that Lincoln was also dealing with the first raids by Sitting Bull, as he tried to stop the march West by the Americans.

With all the difficulties facing us in these issues, I believe by telling the story through the optimistic eyes of children we can again go to the heart of the characters and move beyond stereotypes. We are not here to demonize any sector of America but we are also not here to pretend that a good fairy waved her wand and made everything wonderful. I hope to do it well. I know it will be engaging.

We are back on TV - CBS this Fall on Saturday Mornings
Hi - I am Kevin O'Donnell and I was one of the producers and the creator of the Liberty's Kids series. The show will be back on CBS this fall on Saturday Mornings. FYI - I am also thinking of writing a new book set in the time of the Civil War with new Lib Kids characters. What do you think of a new book being set during that time?

LK Rewatch Anyone? (Not sure if this has been suggested already)
So after seeing these place come back to life, I thought of something. Since most, if not all of LK episodes are up on Youtube, how about rewatching the entire thing together? It wouldn't be livestreaming per se (I don't even know how to go about doing that XP), the actual episode would just be posted in an entry and then we could watch it. The only thing would be coming up with a date and time. I'm free most of the time and I live on the east coast. Perhaps make it a weekend thing?

James/Sarah Drabble
Hallo friends!

It's been a while, hasn't it? A simple scroll to the bottom of the page takes us back to early 2010. :( To cheer up this quiet comm, I come bearing a Christmas/New Year's present!

When I came home from school for winter break, I found this little James/Sarah ficlet on my computer I had written a while ago. Did a bit of editing and decided to post it for you lovely people. :) I don't have a beta reader, so I was also hoping to get a little feedback on it from other people familiar with LK. (Meaning... the flow makes perfect sense in my own head, but I'm not sure how it reads for other people.)

Title: Her Ring
Characters: James and Sarah
Summary: James never thought he would give his mother's ring to a British girl he barely knew. But he did, and in the process, ended up giving away something much more valuable.
A/N: Little drabble ficlet purely made of James/Sarah fluff. I do not own Liberty's Kids.

Beneath the cut!Collapse )
